Salt Marsh Opera Student Education
The Salt Marsh Opera Student Education Program features dress rehearsals open to students, productions in schools and a student intern program, all designed to introduce students to the rich world of opera.
STUDENT INTERN PROGRAM
Students involved in Salt Marsh Opera's Student Intern Program are introduced to the rigor and professional standards involved in the production of an opera while being mentored during the learning process by members of Salt Marsh Opera's production staff.
- Students are selected to participate in the Intern Program.
- Interns participate as high school students or college students.
- Interns for the opera will work as chorus members, supernumeraries or production assistants in areas such as stage crew, set building, lighting, make-up, and costumes.
- An intern scholarship check is awarded after the completion of the internship.
- Salt Marsh Interns have come from Groton, New London, North Stonington, Norwich, Stonington, Wood River Junction and Westerly.
- Students from region middle schools and high schools are invited to attend a dress rehearsal during the school day..
- All student dress rehearsal performances are costumed and include orchestra, sets, lighting and supertitles.
- Students from the audience are occasionally invited on stage to participate with the cast in a group scene.
- Singers and directors interact with students during a question and answer period at the end of the performance.
- Salt Marsh Opera fully funds student performances and bus transportation to and from the performance hall through grants.
STUDENT PERFORMANCES At Area High Schools
Performances, scheduled during the school day, are attended by music students and other classes at the invitation of the teachers.
- An explanation of the plot, characters and music is followed by a selection of excerpts from the opera.
- Students from other schools and districts are invited to attend in consultation with the host Music Director and Administration.
All facets of the educational program are evaluated yearly by teachers, students and Salt Marsh Opera.
