About Us

CURTAINS UP!

It all began in 2000, when several friends from Stonington, CT, lamenting the scarcity of regional opera, started Salt Marsh Opera. Ever since, we have been enthusiastically showcasing beloved operatic works, both old and new.

DRAMA!

Opera is about heroes and villains, comedies, and cliffhangers set to classic scores by composers with lyrics that embrace their harmonies and melodies. Its sets, lights, costumes, voices, and orchestration fill darkened theaters, bringing the drama to life.

OPERA IS FOR EVERYONE!

You’ve heard us say this before and will again. Our commitment is to present high-quality performances of opera and other musical events. We strive to ensure that everyone can share in the experience by selecting venues that allow physical access for all and providing accessible programming.

NEW INITIATIVES!

Salt Marsh Presents seeks to create opportunities for talented artists and audiences in our region to find one another. We look forward to your being part of our growing audience!

MUSIC NEVER SLEEPS!

In spring we take to classrooms across CT and RI with teaching artists, who introduce elementary and middle school students to the beauty, joy, and depth of opera. This Kids Love Music! program culminates in our first production of the season.

Summer means opportunities to enjoy music al fresco at Music at the Lighthouse and Opera in the Park, as well as talks and events sponsored by TheGuild and musical soirées.

Fall is our main event. Catch our annual opera production staged in venues around southern New England, including The Katherine Hepburn Theater in Old Saybrook, CT; The United Theatre in Westerly, RI; and the Loos Center in Woodstock, CT. We recruit additional chorus and orchestra members from the communities where we perform.

In the winter months, catch up with TheGuild for programs of song, lectures by musical and theatrical experts, and other opera-related events. At the same time, our Artistic Director will be in New York, auditioning hundreds of talented singers for roles in the following year’s productions.

TIME TO CELEBRATE!

2025 marks our twenty fifth year. We hope you’ll join us for a gala in celebration of our silver anniversary in August.
